Lewis in at Blazers as they se

DERBY Trailblazers are hitting the road for the biggest week yet in a so-far impressive season.

The Blazers travel to in-form Coventry Crusaders for a league game today and head on down the M1 straight after it for an overnight stop ahead of tomorrow's EBL Men's Trophy semi-final against London Mets.

Both matches will present stern challenges for a Derby side who will travel with a new signing added to the roster.

They have signed 21-year-old Ryan Lewis, who was a teammate of Martyn Gayle and Joel Madourie at Birmingham A last season.

The 6ft 9in power forward has a reputation for making explosive interventions in games.

Derby beat Coventry 93-84 at Moorways earlier in the season but coach Clarence Wiggins says their rivals are much-improved since then.

"The Trophy semi-final is very important to us but we want to win our league game first," said Wiggins.

"We're going to focus on Coventry by looking at what we did well last time and reviewing the game tape we have of them.

They've added a big American - 6ft 9in power forward Matt Smith - who can really score, so we'll need to try and limit him.

"We also need to watch out for Stephen Danso because he really hurt us last time when he put a big run together late in the game."

Smith can play both inside and out and scored 25 points on his debut.

Along with Danso and fellow American John Olinger, he combined for 88 points in Coventry's recent win over Tees Valley Mohawks.

"If we were to go there unprepared, there's no doubt we would lose, as other teams have done in recent weeks," said Wiggins.

Tomorrow's Trophy semi-final tips off at 1pm.

"The match against the Mets will be difficult because they tend to put out a stronger lineup at home than they do on the road," said Wiggins.

"But we'll be taking the same approach as we do for the Coventry game. We'll look at some game tape and try to identify their weaknesses.

"I don't think they have great three-point shooters and if we can keep them from getting too many offensive rebounds, I'm confident we can win the ball game.

"I keep telling the guys at every training session that we're a really good team and I think they're starting to believe it.

"But there's still room for improvement and we intend to make sure we Richard Mille Replica do between now and the end of the season. We have moments when we look really solid but we need to reach the point where we can do that for the entire game and I believe that's something we can do as the season progresses.

"Getting to a final has been one of our objectives since the start of the season so, hopefully, Sunday's game will see us realise that ambition."

Derby beat the Mets 81-48 at Moorways in December but both sides have made changes to their roster since then.

The Mets lost Mansour Mbye to Edmonton Phoenix and Laurent Irish to London Leopards over the Christmas break but have signed veteran forward Okolie Ugbana, whose most recent club was Worthing Thunder. They are also waiting on international clea

Murder hunt over five-body ske

POLICE are hunting a real-life 'bone collector' after the discovery of a near-perfect skeleton made up from five different bodies.

Detectives believe that the man murdered his victims and then pieced together the skeleton.

Officers are now sifting through hundreds of missing persons files for clues.

Forensic scientists say the skeleton is made from the bones of three women and two men, all aged between 25 and 55, who died over a 20-year period between the mid-Eighties and 2006.

The bizarre discovery was made after fire crews were called to a blaze on waste ground in Magliana, Rome.

Police said alongside the skeleton were a wallet and keys belonging to Libero Ricci, 77, who vanished in November 2003.

Initially officers believed the pensioner had been the victim of a mugging and his body was then burnt, but their inquiry took a surprise twist when pathologists from Rome's La Sapienza University established that the bones were not Ricci's.

Vittorio Rizzi, of Rome Police, said: 'It's possible that the bones were gathered by a collector - and that he killed the five people to make up the skeleton.'

Musical master

He may have the surname of another famous director but unlike Tim, Chris Burton hasn't

got any manic Mad Hatters or weird Willy Wonkas in his repertoire of leading men. He does, however, have the same knack of getting the best out of his actors. Emma Goodwin

looks behind the scenes.

pandora beads

--------------------

THE BOSS calls him mad, his colleagues call him Chris, his rugby mates gave him the moniker Fat Sam for a while, but for most of the day he is called Sir.

Chris Burton could be forgiven for being a little confused about who he is, but his actors are sure of one thing: he's a heck of a director.

For 14 years Mr Burton, or Sir to his cast and crew, has pulled together one excellent show after another for the Palmerston North Boys' High School production held in the first term of the year.

There was only one year when the man didn't rule the stage, and that was in 2006 when he was overseas.

Mr Burton joined the school in 1994 as an English teacher and moved into the drama department at the end of 1996.

It was not a happy move originally, as the class was a magnet for young men looking for an easy study option and wanting to opt out of subjects that were perceived to be more mentally taxing.

"It was the only time I hated being in class."

Strong words from a teacher who now displays such enthusiasm for his subject and is head of the department, but there is a reason for the change.

"Tracy Lynn-Cody arrived in school and with her input and enthusiasm, the department was revamped and energised and it became a compulsory subject for Year 9 students," says Mr Burton. "Now the numbers are strong and it is well supported by senior management, surviving changes throughout the school in the compulsory subjects."

No slouch on stage himself, Burton has regularly performed in Abbey Theatre productions and

is considering auditioning for the company's upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

"I haven't been on stage for a while but when I am in a production I have to be very well organised."

It seems organisation is his forte, if his proteges are to be believed.

Year 13 student Alex Sinclair has worked with his drama teacher in two productions, The Wedding Singer in 2008 and last year in Blood Brothers.

"He is very organised, he always has a plan for any given situation and he sticks to it. He always has a clear idea and he follows through."

Excellent qualities in any director as it instils confidence in a group of people who, due to the nature of the job at hand, often have egos that need to be reined in.

"It's comforting to know he knows what he is doing and as a firm task master he expects the best out of you."

It is a sentiment echoed by fellow thespian and Year rolex replica 13 student Warwick Sarrell, who is playing Jacob in this year's production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

"He certainly pushes you to get things done. He doesn't let you slack off, ever."

Watching Mr Burton at work with the group of actors he has gathered together for this season's production, it's evid

A little 'mystery' helps to ke

SEEING as Valentine's Day is only two days away, I was planning to use this space to discuss all I've learnt about all I've learnt about women.

After realising that a blank column isn't the most exciting read, I decided to rethink my plan.

According to a survey of 2000 men dragged along to the Perfume Shop in the UK by their girlfriends, six out of 10 of them believed they knew their partner inside and out.

The report went on to say that 12 per cent did not know their partner's eye colour, 10% did not know her birthday and a further 8% did not know what her natural hair colour was.

Even less knew her favourite perfume, bra size and job title.

In a world where "average girl meets prince/dream guy/sparkly vampire" movies are all the rage, replica bag wholesale it's nice to know that the expectations for the average guy are still at a reasonable level, somewhere between "Prince Charming" and "actually knows what my favourite smelly thing is".

But what would happen if the shoe was on the other foot (besides men getting her shoe size wrong too)?

Females aren't perfect either, and I'm sure just as many would get important details about their partner wrong too.

I asked my girlfriend Jenna, from the Sunshine Coast, to put me to the test and to makes things fair, I'd ask the same of her.

We've been good friends for almost three years and have been dating for half that time, so surely we'd know everything about each other by now, right? Right?

JENNA'S QUESTIONS:

- Where was I born?

My answer: Shepparton, Victoria. (C orrect, 1 point).

- What is my favourite band?

My answer: Currently, The Small Faces. (C orrect, 1 point)

- What are my hobbies?

My answer: Asides from collecting vintage clothing, art. ( Correct, 1 point).

- Have I had any serious medical conditions?

My answer: Guilian-Biyro Syndrome and a bruised ego. (I t's 'Guillain-barre syndrome' but correct, 1 point).

- My favourite book?

My answer: Twilight. HA! No... Stephen King's IT? ("One Foot Wrong" by Sofie Laguna, no points).

- What are my strange habits?

My answer: Consistently applying lipstick, laugh like a machine gun and actually sticking with me. (Also would have accepted "fiddle compulsively and grip objects like a squirrel" half a point).

- What was my first pet's name?

Replica fendi wholesale

My answer: It was one of your millions of cats your mother had. No idea of name. ( Correct, names were Fluff and Jiff, half a point).

- What colour are my eyes?

My answer: Greenish. (G reen with a bit of grey, 1 point)

TOTAL: 6/8 correct.

So, 6/8 answers correct. Not too bad, but then it was time to see how many basic details Jenna knew about me.

MY QUESTIONS:

- When is my birthday?

Her answer: May 16 ( Correct, 1 point).

- Which actor who played Jam

A lifetime of shared service t

Myrtle Virginia Williams had big plans. So did G. Richard Thompson . They never imagined their plans would mesh, leading to a lifetime of love and serving others.

Myrtle was a 1945 Deep Creek High School graduate enrolled at Bob Jones College (now Bob Jones University, in Greenville, S.C.) when she was introduced to Richard.

"It was 1945, the war was over, and the young men were returning to college. I was a sophomore when Richard, who had been in the Navy for three years, came to the school," Myrtle, now 81, said.

The two quickly learned they had plans to become missionaries. For Richard, who was born in India, it was a way of life. "Both my parents and grandparents were missionaries in India," said Richard, now 84, who felt a calling to go back after his studies.

For Myrtle, the calling came when she was 16, one Sunday at Deep Creek Baptist Church. She didn't know much about the world then, she admitted. "I only knew I wanted to go to China and work in an orphanage," she said. "Richard had a wealth of experience when it came to the world and geography."

"But she was a tough girl from Deep Creek," Richard added.

Their first real date, watching a soccer game, left Myrtle feeling slightly deflated because Richard kept talking about his upcoming exams. "I was ready to end the date and finally said, 'Do you want to go study?'

" Myrtle recalled.

A baffled Richard, who heard "Do you want to go steady?" took several minutes to regain his composure.

"His grandmother had warned him that these Southern girls are fast," Myrtle laughed. They dated for a year and a half, but broke up because their dreams seemed destined to take them to two different corners of the world.

"We were both strong-willed," Myrtle said. "He was adamant about India and I was just as stubborn about China, but as we like to tell it, God has a sense of humor. He had to make a whole new country just so we could be together. China closed to missionaries, and India was partitioned. We went to Pakistan."

The couple married on Aug. 16, 1949, at Deep Creek Baptist Church. Richard completed his degree in education and evangelism the same year, and Myrtle graduated with a degree in education, both Christian and secondary, in January 1950.

At 2 a.m. Dec. 24, 1950, they set sail aboard the Queen Elizabeth for the first of many adventures. "We waved goodbye to the Statue of Liberty," Myrtle said.

As career missionaries, the couple spent 18 years in Pakistan, went to Iran in 1976 and stayed until 1978 (as the revolution began), and were in the United Arab Emirates from 1979 to 1986. They retired in 1989. Now, they make their home in Suffolk and enjoy a family that includes five children, 17 grandchildren and one great- grandchild.

"We taught the gospel because it's the No. 1 mandate that Jesus gave to us," Richard said.

"If I had to do it all over again, I'd gratefully and gladly do it," Myrtle said. "We've had a wonderful life."

After assault, CIDCO men fear

After the assault on Additional Collector (Controller of Unauthorised Constructions) Sumant Bhange of City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) recently, officials of the planning agency are reluctant to step out on the field. Bhange had filed an FIR with Kharghar police after being assaulted pandora style beads by Vishwanath Thakur, deputy sarpanch of Morbe village near Kharghar after a major demolition drive in the presence of police officials.

Thakur's bail petition is still pending. CIDCO and NMMC officials from the anti-encroachment department have not undertaken a single demolition drive since the incident. As a result, encroachment is on a rise once again but the officials choose to turn a blind eye.

Officials from the department cite several problems, the prime being lack of police initiative and security cover during such drives when CIDCO officials battle locals and face threats. A senior official complained that policemen deployed to provide security cover to officials remain mute spectators during the drive and take a neutral stand during any conflicts with politicians and locals. He also alleged that locals encroaching upon CIDCO land are empowered by the presence of MLAs and MPs during such drives.

He said, "We intend to file an affidavit before the High Court to apprise the judges of the ground reality. We have already sent a report to the state government and briefed the Chief Secretary and State Minister for Urban Development but no decision has been taken in this regard. How can they expect the officers to step out in such conditions and risk their lives?"

The officials pointed out that while Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has huge staff strength of 192 employees and NMMC 100 including ward Replica prada wholesale officers, contractors and officials appointed at the ward levels, CIDCO has a meager staff of nine employees, one of whom is a Project Affected Person and refuses to participate in these drives. rolex replica

CIDCO officials also complained that they are not provided with enough vehicles, amenities or staff to undertake such big drives. "How can a staff of eight persons monitor 95 villages in three talukas and protect land worth crores of rupees?" he questioned.

Another CIDCO official on condition of anonymity said, "We are not against the locals. We understand that they have sacrificed their land and are yet to get compensation under the 12.5 scheme. Also, their homes are yet to be regularised but we are only doing our job and following the court's instructions. Nobody should take law in their hands."

CIDCO officials have demanded more vehicles, security and appointment of clerks and more staff in each node to address such issues. In all, CIDCO officials have filed more than 25 FIRs related to encroachment issues in various nodes of the city in the last two years.
